Membership in YWCP requires an audition. Don’t be frightened, as there is a place for you in our three YWCP choruses. In your audition, we will determine what ensemble is appropriate for your age, vocal maturity and music reading ability. We offer three levels of choral experience, each with its own curriculum and musical objectives. The grade levels are approximate markers, and some flexibility is given to certain situations. All YWCP ensembles teach young women substantial music skills, vocal technique and the joy of performing, as well as instill important life benefits such as confidence, focus, self-discipline, problem solving, responsibility and compassion.
Below you will find information about our three levels, Prelude Chorus, Allegro Chorus, and the Young Women's Chorus, as well as audition requirements for each ensemble. Auditions for Prelude Chorus, Allegro Chorus, and Allegro Ensemble will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017, in San Francisco. Sign up for an audition. Email

Our newest offering, Prelude Chorus, is a place to learn vocal skills and musicianship and meet other girls who love to sing. This ensemble requires no previous music training. Through a Kodály music curriculum, choristers learn basic vocal techniques, sight-reading and performance skills. They sing unison and two-part repertoire in many languages and present 2-4 public performances yearly. Prelude Chorus rehearses Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Allegro Chorus requires some prior music skills, such as a solid understanding of music notation, treble clef note names and basic rhythms, as well as a free vocal production. Through a Kodály music curriculum, members of this ensemble receive vocal and musical training, including music theory, ear training, sight-reading, vocal technique, and performance skills. This chorus sings a wide variety of music styles in up to 3-4 parts. Allegro Chorus, directed by Kodály music educator, Danelle Johnson, rehearses Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 4:00-6:00 p.m., and performs at least 4-6 times per year.
YWC is an advanced young women’s chorus conducted by Artistic Director Dr. Susan McMane. YWC sings challenging choral music for women’s voices, emphasizing classical compositions from all eras, and including world music, jazz and Broadway selections. The chorus performs 6-8 concerts a year in the San Francisco Bay Area and tours nationally or internationally every season. All members of YWC take voice lessons from a professional voice teacher in small classes every other week. YWC rehearses on Sunday afternoons from 3-6 p.m. and Wednesday nights from 6:30-9 p.m. Once a month the Sunday afternoon rehearsal begins at 1:30 p.m. to accommodate extra time for sectionals.
