About Us

The Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco provides talented young women from across the Bay Area with exceptional interpersonal and musical experiences. Through the Young Women’s Choral Projects, participants from diverse cultural, educational and socio-economic backgrounds find their voices as singers, artists and women in a nurturing musical environment that empowers them to artistic and personal excellence. The collaborative experience of learning and creating high-quality choral music fosters the development of each young woman both musically and individually, as well as teaches them important life skills like dedication, commitment to themselves and to one another, and working in community.

Our repertoire is diverse, coming from many periods in the western classical tradition, sung in many languages, and also include world music, jazz and Broadway selections. In addition, the Young Women’s Choral Projects is committed to expanding the body of choral literature for young women’s voices by commissioning original works and arrangements.

YWCP Ensembles

Allegro Chorus (grades 4-10)

A new chorus for young women, the Allegro Chorus is a place to improve vocal skills and musicianship and meet other girls who love to sing. Members of this ensemble will receive vocal and musical training, including music theory, ear training, sight-reading, vocal technique, and performance skills. This chorus will sing a wide variety of music styles in 3-4 parts. Allegro Chorus rehearses Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 4-6 p.m., and will perform at least 3 times per year.

Young Women’s Chorus (grades 7-12)

YWC is an advanced young women’s chorus conducted by Artistic Director Susan McMane. YWC sings challenging choral music for women’s voices, emphasizing classical compositions from all eras, and including world music, jazz and Broadway selections. The chorus performs six concerts a year in the San Francisco Bay Area and tours nationally or internationally every season. All members of YWC take voice lessons from a professional voice teacher in small classes every other week. YWC rehearses on Sunday afternoons from 3-6 p.m. and Wednesday nights from 6:30-9 p.m. Once a month the Sunday afternoon rehearsal begins at 1:30 p.m. to accommodate extra time for sectionals.
